Where’s The Best Place To Buy Boxes In Las Vegas?
Everyone we know is moving to Las Vegas, or is moving within the city. We also moved in 2021 so we know things and hear stories. Most people agree that buying boxes at Home Depot and Lowe’s is the least expensive, the least hassle, and the thing to do if you can afford it. Basically, the two stores’ boxes are the same except for the size of their Large Boxes.
Home Depot’s large boxes are tall and Lowe’s’ large boxes are wide. Regular boxes cost $1-$2. Heavy-Duty boxes cost almost double that. Home Depot and Lowe’s are great because of their prices and they deliver in a few days. No charge delivery is easily attainable. For pick-up, there should be a store close by where you go inside or they bring your order to your car. You can also overbuy and return unused boxes.
Walmart’s boxes cost slightly less and are made with lighter-weight cardboard. They are smaller than HD and Lowes boxes but they’re fine for smaller lighter items. We tried them and the medium-size boxes packed with medium weight, collapsed when stacked 3 high.
Moving companies and truck rental companies charge 2-5 times more than HD and Lowe’s for boxes and tape. Hanging shirts can be packed flat in the Large boxes from Lowe’s saving on wardrobe boxes. Fill the space at the bottom of wardrobe boxes with pillows or clean clothing items. Shoes may get the clothes dirty.
Extra-large boxes are kinda awkward to lift and carry. We only buy a few and use them for large kitchen items and bedding.
When your boxes are empty and broken down, you can easily sell all of them (usually to one person) for half price. If you buy used boxes from Craigslist or an app you can resell them for the same price you paid, possibly getting boxes for no cost. Often box sellers include or sell packing materials and bubble wrap.
What’s The Best Packing Tape To Use?
Always use a brand name HEAVY DUTY PACKING TAPE. Using cheap tape means you use twice as much tape and spend twice as much time taping. Hand held dispensers are great and you may want 2 or three. Both the tape gun and the red or green hand help dispensers are reloadable. Tape rolls and bubble wrap are also sold at office supply stores.
Only tape the sides of boxes if you are packing heavy or breakable objects in the box. This makes removing tape to break down boxes much easier. You’ll probably want to buy a 6 pack or more because tape is also used for wrapping towels and blankets around art, electronics, and furniture.
We use a desktop scotch tape dispenser for taping bubble wrap whenever possible.

✨ Smart Packing Strategies
- Start Early: Begin packing 4–6 weeks before your move.
- Label Boxes Clearly: Use a color-coded system or bold labels by room.
- Pack By Room: This makes unpacking faster and more efficient.
- Keep Essentials Accessible: Pack an “open-first” box with toiletries, snacks, chargers, documents, etc.
🛏 Moving Big Furniture
- Disassemble When Possible: Take apart bed frames, dining tables, and large shelving units or pay the movers to do this.
- Use Furniture Sliders: These help move heavy items without scratching floors.
- Use Clear Plastic Wrap: If you have fragile material on furniture, or doors and drawers in furniture, remove fragile items and wrap plastic wrap around the piece. That keeps drawers and doors closed eliminating the time and boxes to pack those items.
- Wrap with Padding: Protect fragile surfaces with blankets, bubble wrap, or moving pads. Movers usually provide those or you can rent them

Packing Supplies and Bubblewrap
We suggest that you use towels and linens whenever possible. Since you have to pack them anyway, you might as well wrap stuff inside of them. Home Depot sells extra-wide (stereo equipment sized) orange bubble wrap for electronics.
You can find bubble wrap where ever boxes are sold. You probably need a roll to pack your house. Clean newspaper is often purchased. Personally, I don’t see the use and it isn’t cheap but some people prefer it to bubble wrap. Plus, your kids might like coloring on those big pieces after you unpack. Avoid using newsprint because it gets everything dirty.
Move-In and Move-Out Cleaning
A move-out cleaning is different from ordinary maid service cleanings. The biggest difference is thoroughness. When moving, you’ll want fingerprints and the place on door jams where your dog rubs cleaned. After moving furniture, behind beds, baseboards and walls can be pretty dirty.
The standard Las Vegas Board of Realtor contract says the house needs to be “broom cleaned.” Most sellers clean the entire house, however, some don’t. We encourage our sellers to clean because we expect their new house to be clean when they arrive.
We only hire one company to do Move In and Move Out Cleanings because we haven’t hired others. Hoshea at Dry Cleaning Carpets and House Cleaning- 1-702- 205-7359. They get everything done in one visit, work quickly, and when carpets are dry cleaned, you can walk on them 90 minutes later.
The services they provide are charged by the hour. You only pay for what you want done. A typical move-out cleaning includes all floors, baseboards, windows, kitchen appliances, counters, and the inside and outside of cupboards and drawers. All bathrooms, light fixtures, and porches are cleaned.
A move-in cleaning can be what the seller didn’t do. Keep in mind that since it rarely rains, most people don’t clean their windows very often. When we write a contract for home buyers, it will say that the seller is to clean the house including all appliances, windows, and floors.
How Local Movers Operate
Movers in Las Vegas will give you a quote at your house on the phone, in person, or on a video chat call.
They charge by the hour, by the person, mileage, and have a trip charge. The tip is not included and they shouldn’t charge for lunch. We tip according to care and speed.
The standard moving insurance is $0.60 a pound for damaged property. Claims need to be made within 2 weeks and will require pictures. $0.60 is not much money. Consider adding insurance.
You’ll want to check with your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance company to see what they cover before adding on additional insurance. Our movers scraped the entire back of a 1-year-old $5000 leather couch on the door frame. Insurance paid us $60. If a $600 TV is dropped? 50 pounds at $0.60 is only $30.

We don’t recommend movers but some local companies are listed below. I know of no local moving company in Las Vegas that offers any kind of discount. If you find one, please let us know. Keep in mind that hiring through a referral service means you’ll pay more. Call moving companies directly and interview.

We have a friend who packs houses and offices for a company that charges $65 an hour for her time. She doesn’t make half the amount they charge. Nancy is the nicest person in the world and will also help you pack or unpack if you need help. Let us know if you want assistance and we can hook you up with Nancy directly.
How National Movers Operate
National movers usually are able to weigh your belongings and may charge for insurance by the pound. They charge by miles and time. If you are quoted a price, please don’t let them change it if they take more time. Crews vary in speed and that is not your problem. On the other hand, if they don’t take as much time as you were quoted, ask them to shuffle boxes or arrange furniture.
When interviewing movers, ask what they provide. Some let you use wardrobe boxes. They pack them and then unpack them at the new house. Ask if they have a large crate with slots for artwork, mirrors, and TVs.
Some local and national movers charge extra for blankets or $10 a roll for cheap tape to wrap a blanket around your furniture.
North American moved us once and put blankets on the stair rails and walls before they began at no cost. They cost a bit more but did a quality job and honored their quoted price despite requesting an additional mover.

Local Truck Rentals:
If you want to rent a truck and move your household yourself, here are the big companies for Las Vegas truck rentals. Since they charge a daily fee and add on a cost for each mile driven, you’ll want to find the one closest to your house.
Note: If you need movers, most companies will provide hourly movers to load, unload, pack and unpack. Labor companies like Manpower are another good resource to hire movers.
We rented a truck once to empty a storage unit hiring Home Depot laborers on the way. When we got to the house they tried to renegotiate the price. I refused to renegotiate and they stayed. Agree to a price before you leave the parking lot if you are hiring day labor.
Most storage companies rent trucks as a side business. Below are the national websites to check availability at all locations at once. Note: if a previous renter doesn’t return their truck on time, you may show up and leave without a truck. Go early in the day to hopefully avoid difficulties.

Containers and PODS
Companies have discovered that people like containers to load over time. In Las Vegas U-haul has containers and PODS is the most well known. there are others and prices always change so please Google companies.
The only issue in Las Vegas are HOA’s. If you live in a community with CCRs, chances are that your neighbors won’t like a container in your driveway or on the street. Expect a letter and possibly a fine if one stays beyond the time allowed in your CCRs.
How to quickly liquidate furniture and belongings:
- Give stuff away.
- Call around between 8 AM and 4 PM on weekdays to Non-Profit organizations for pick-up.
- Take your belongings to a charity drop box or container in a parking lot or drive through the Goodwill. There are numerous drop-off boxes for various organizations throughout the city. Donations must be clean, have no stains, and be useable and saleable.
Non-Profit Organizations with Free Furniture Pick-Up
CALL AROUND AND MAKE AN APPOINTMENT. For furniture, call to schedule a pick-up at least 3 WEEKS ahead of your desired pick-up date. Days of the week for pickup are based on zip codes. They all request ground floor or curbside locations with no stairs only and everything but furnishings must be boxed or bagged.
Note: Due to Covid and the price of gas, it may be difficult to find an organization that still will pick up donations. We usually know a church or refugee program needing furniture so feel free to ask.
Opportunity Village donation pickup is at least 6 weeks out today for our client’s furniture. You currently need to call on the 1st of the month to schedule for the next month. (ie: June 1 they start scheduling for July)
Big Brothers/Sisters will pick up everything in a house except furniture (all kitchen items, linens, clothes, books, lamps, art, etc.). They are 1-2 weeks out depending on the zip code.
SafeNest will accept smaller items and are picking them up within a week. They don’t accept furniture. Clothes, kitchen and household items are appreciated.
We’ve been told Catholic Charities pick-up and donate to refugees from numerous countries. They did not return my call so I have no more information at this time.
Charities With No Pickups – Deseret Industries, SAVERS, Goodwill, Salvation Army
Eight different charities where I left messages didn’t call me back. I let them know I have an entire 2 bedroom vacation home of contents to donate. The above 3 companies are the only 3 that take large items that returned my calls. There are others that will pick up small items.
Online Auction Companies:

Online Auctions usually don’t get the customers that in-person estate sales get. But they can come one day and photograph and one day people come to take their items. Others may take your items to their warehouse.
Since once bought a $2000 treadmill for $5 from an online auction. No one bid on it because their listing didn’t say “treadmill” wasn’t photographed open and was mixed in with dolls. I recommend that you check their listings.
- McManus Auctions does high-end sales and rare items. Guns, jewelry, art, coins, and designers are where they are usually found.
- The largest auction company in Nevada is Nellis Auctions. Because they do Amazon returns their past customer list is huge therefore usually getting more money for an item. Because they are busy, they may not accept smaller auctions.
- Call Renee Estate Liquidation Sales – We bought 2 vehicles from her sales for our daughters.
- Silver Lining Estate Sales do a lot of estate sales in all price ranges. They do occasional online auctions.
- Sunny Transitions liquidated a wealthy hoarder’s house a few years ago that we attended. We were impressed with the organization and security they provided for such a big job. They do occasional online auctions.
Estate Sale Companies In Las Vegas
Our suggestion for choosing an estate sale company is to interview, interview, and negotiate. You will possibly spend time with them and you need to like them and trust them. There are A LOT of companies. You’ll find the best companies for the entire United States at EstateSales.Net and enter Las Vegas for the city.
See if you like their pictures and verbiage. I wish they put more details about clothing and shoe sizes, model and year of a car and put the brand of furniture. I might check something out that I don’t need if I knew more details.
Estate Sale Companies usually clean a house afterward and donate any unsold merchandise. This allows you to move and they handle everything else. The process is labor-intensive and they keep a good portion of the proceeds.
Consider Craig’s List and Facebook Marketplace for expensive items before agreeing to sell them with a company. Some companies will ask for an appraisal. Think twice before getting one.
A seller of ours wanted to price her baby grand piano at $2500. The estate sale company asked her to get an appraisal from their guy for $350. It appraised for $4000 and the estate sale accepted a $2000 offer. With a 50/50 split and her paying for the appraisal, she received $650 for an absolutely beautiful piano.

Make Sure You Know About Moving Insurance- place claims quickly and follow up with the moving company. They tend to lose claims…
Local Move Tip: Many of our clients use plastic containers to move unwrapped glass items to their new houses. Then they quickly empty unpack them and reuse the container. Because they use their cars and plastic that has some give, stack dishes on their side in a tub to transport well without wrapping. Don’t do this with expensive glass items! Not wrapping so many dishes and glasses saves a lot of time wrapping and unwrapping. Plus – your dishes are at the house so you can use them.
Local Moving Tip: Consider renting a van for $20 a day to move your TVs, art, plants, lamps, and other delicate items yourself. Hourly movers will also help load and unload your van and/or cars.
Moving Tip: Pack your bedding, pillows, and overnight bags for the first night in your vehicles.
